Chibueze 'Chi" Meremetoh
Chi’s unwavering determination reminds us that even obstacles can become stepping stones toward success. Chi was born in Nigeria and moved to New York City when he was six years old. Growing up, his parents always taught him of the importance of education and how to treat others with kindness and respect, which he practices daily.
Chi has a bachelor's degree in psychology and a minor in public health, and he enjoyed working on the business side of healthcare. Yet, Chi craved more one-on-one care with patients.
Chi began his search for a nursing program, and set his sights on the American South. In 2022, Chi enrolled in the joint enrollment program between UAB and Wallace State Community College.
Chi’s first time in Alabama was for a Wallace State Nursing orientation session. After catching a flight from Queens to Chattanooga, he embarked on a series of bus rides that took him through Atlanta and Birmingham before finishing his trip with an Uber ride to the campus of Wallace State. Despite logistical hurdles that left him arriving four hours later than planned, he was warmly greeted by the faculty, and he quickly immersed himself in the program.
As a student at Wallace State, Chi excelled academically and was awarded scholarships for his dedication to his studies and his contributions as a tutor. Today, Chi is a nurse, like his mother, and will be working on a medical-surgical unit at UAB. Congratulations, Chi.
