Diabetes, weight loss topics of WSCC Nursing event

Hanceville, Ala. — It’s hard to escape the commercials advertising drugs for managing diabetes and weight loss, and for many they may cause more questions than answers for either healthcare workers or patients. With that in mind, Wallace State Community College is hosting an event aimed at providing answers and educational opportunities for healthcare professionals. “Fresh Perspectives on Diabetes Management and Weight Loss” will be held Friday, April 25, from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Peinhardt Conference Center in the School of Nursing and Center for Science.
Topics to be discussed and presenters include:
- Educating the Patient with Diabetes, Lisa Ellard, Wallace State Nursing faculty
- Diabetes and Nutrition, Kim Addison, Cullman Regional Medical Center
- Obesity Medications, Dr. Nakayla Ruse, Cullman Internal Medicine
- Insulin Pump Therapy, Jill Meggs, Medtronic Diabetes, North Alabama
- Comorbidities and Diabetes Medications, Lisa Ellard, Wallace State Nursing faculty
- Considerations for Compounded Biosimilar Medications, Chris Borden, Borden Family Pharmacy
Deborah “Pepper” Hoover, chair of the Wallace State Department of Nursing Education, said the event would be beneficial to all healthcare workers. The topics discussed, as listed above, should empower the participants to more effectively assist people with diabetes and issues with obesity, she said.
Vendors scheduled to attend the event include ATI, UAB School of Nursing, Athens State University, Ken Glover Drug, Cullman Diabetes Center, Julie Mobley and Novo Nordisk.
Healthcare professionals attending the event can earn six contact hours for continuing education. Nursing educators can submit posters through April 11 for a display to be shown at the event.
The fee for the event, which includes breakfast and lunch, is $50 through April 15 and $75 after. Proceeds from the event fund scholarships for Wallace State Nursing students.
