Athletics Roundup: Volleyball sweeps Pellissippi State, falls to Snead State; Women’s Golf Finish Fourth at Mustang Invitational

Hanceville, AL — The Wallace State Volleyball team secured a 3-0 victory over Pellissippi State on Sept. 14, 2024, with set scores of 25-12, 26-24 and 25-13.   

Sophomore Chloe Jackson of Athens led the offense with 15 kills on 20 attempts, adding three block assists and two solo blocks. Freshman Kailey Dickerson of Wellington contributed 10 kills, eight digs and one assist. Freshman Rachel Mecklenburg of Madison had eight kills and one dig, while freshman Ali Price of Rainsville recorded 32 assists, 11 digs and two service aces. Freshman Kaylee Roman added two kills to round out the team’s effort, while freshman Amanda Monge of Davenport, Fla., added seven service aces and one kill, playing a key role in Wallace State’s success at the service line.   

Defensively, freshman Abby McDonald of Cullman led the back row with eight digs. Freshman Molly Shiflett of Corner and freshman Amelia Fowler of Sardis City contributed five digs each, while freshman Ava Calvarese of Fairview tallied two digs.   

Wallace State Volleyball Falls to Snead State in Hard-Fought Match on Sept. 18   

Wallace State Volleyball battled through three competitive sets against Snead State Community College on Sept. 18, but ultimately fell, with set scores of 20-25, 21-25 and 24-26. Despite the hard-fought loss, the Lady Lions showcased several standout performances.   

Dickerson led the team with eight kills, 15 digs, two assists and one service ace. Monge also recorded eight kills while adding seven digs and one service ace. Jackson added eight kills and three digs, Mecklenburg contributed seven kills and two digs. Shiflett tallied three kills, two digs and one service ace, rounding out Wallace State’s offensive contributions.

Defensively, Calvarese led the back row with five digs, while Fowler and Price added four digs each.    

The Wallace State Lady Lions will compete at home this weekend during the Wallace State Fall Bash. On Friday, Sept. 20, the team will face off against Chattanooga State Community College at 1 p.m. and Roane State Community College at 5 p.m. On Saturday, Sept. 21, the Lady Lions will compete against Vincennes University at 9 a.m. and Walters State Community College at 3 p.m.    

The Wallace State Volleyball team is currently 15-6.      

Women’s Golf Finishes Fourth at Mustang Invitational  

The Wallace State Women’s Golf team delivered a strong performance at the 2024 Mustang Invitational, hosted by Northeast Alabama Community College at Goose Pond Plantation in Scottsboro on Sept. 16 and 17. The Lady Lions finished fourth overall in a competitive field of eight teams.  

Freshman Mallory Brooks of Southside and freshman Alyssa Warren of Dexter, Mo. both finished in the top 10. Brooks placed sixth, shooting two over par, while Warren finished eighth, shooting four over par. 

The Lady Lions now set their sights on the Snead State Invitational at Cherokee Ridge Country Club in Union Grove, taking place on Sept. 30 and Oct. 1.
