Wallace State Welding Hosts Second Annual North Alabama High School Welding Competition
On Friday, March 1, Wallace State Community College’s Welding program welcomed 151 students from over 30 high schools to its second North Alabama High School Welding Competition. The event was held in Wallace State’s Center for Welding Technology and Innovation Center.
“This event is very good exposure for the students as they're building relationships right now,” said Wallace State Welding instructor Melanie Patterson. “With this competition, they all want to win, but they are also meeting people who they may know for the rest of their lives."
Patterson said that, in addition to being a fun day of welding and networking, the competition also addressed an ongoing need for enrollment into the trades.
“There's a huge shortage right now, not only in welding, but with all the trades. The baby boomers are retiring, they're ready to stop working and there aren't enough people to fill their shoes,” said Patterson. "We're here trying to fill that deficit.”
