Women’s Basketball Defeats Volunteer State in Season Opener, 81-62
Hanceville, AL — The Wallace State Community College Women's Basketball team opened their season with a 81-62 victory over Volunteer State Community College on Nov. 4, 2023 in Gallatin, Tenn.
Wallace State's offense was on full display from the outset, jumping to a 21-10 lead in the first quarter. Layla Etchison of Hoover led the charge with 15 points, including three three-point shots, while Kallie Tinker of Pisgah provided a significant boost off the bench with 22 points, hitting six of ten from beyond the arc.
The Lady Lions maintained their dominance throughout the game, showcasing a balanced attack with five players scoring in double figures. Emariah Grant of Huntsville added 11 points and four assists, while Jaden Winfrey of Cullman and Nylaa Fuller of Huntsville contributed 10 and nine points, respectively. Fuller pulled down 14 rebounds to help control the game's tempo.
In addition to posting a 45.3 percent field goal percentage, Wallace State's defense was another key to their success, forcing numerous turnovers and creating easy transition opportunities.
By halftime, Wallace State had built a 36-23 lead. A strong third quarter saw the Lady Lions extend their advantage further, outscoring Volunteer State 25-14, before both teams scored 20 points in the final period, ending the game at 81-62.
