Hanceville, AL — Wallace State Community College’s Oneonta center announces it will hold an open house for those interested in seeing where Nursing classes will be held at the Academic Center and those wishing to know more about the program. The open house will be held on Tuesday, July 25 from 4 to 6 p.m. The Oneonta Academic Center is located at 101 1st Avenue West.

Oneonta NursingThe WSCC Department of Nursing Education announced earlier this year it would be offering several nursing classes at the Oneonta center starting this fall. A maximum of 25 students will make up the first cohort. As applications for the Oneonta Nursing classes are accepted once a year, the cohort will be able to complete their three semesters together as one group.

At the Oneonta site, students will be able to attend lectures and labs outlined in the first three semesters of the traditional Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) pathway. Completing those first three semesters allows students to earn the Practical Nursing certificate and sit for the licensure exam to become a Licensed Practical Nurse. They can seamlessly transfer to the Hanceville campus to complete the next two semesters, which allows students to sit for the licensure exam to become a registered nurse.

“We are excited to show the nursing classroom to our community, our local healthcare providers, and our future nursing students,” said Lauren Wilson, director of the Oneonta Center. “The Nursing staff has been working hard to create a quality learning environment for our students with the most up-to-date technology.”

One classroom at the Academic Center has been dedicated to the Nursing program. Along with seating for lectures, the room includes four hospital beds with monitoring systems the students will use during labs and simulations, mannequins and supplies.

The Nursing students will also be able to utilize a science lab and computer lab for classes and testing.

At times, the students may travel to the Hanceville campus to take part in simulations at the state-of-the-art Simulation Center located in the School of Nursing and Center for Science with other Nursing and Wallace State Health Science students.

The next cohort of students for the Oneonta Center will be accepted in Fall 2024, with applications accepted from March 15 to May 15. Students interested in applying at that time can work ahead on core classes in mathematics, biology, English, etc.

Nursing applications are currently being accepted for the Spring 2024 semester through Oct. 1 for classes at the main campus. Visit www.wallacestate.edu/nursing for more information.

The Wallace State Nursing Department also offers RN options through a mobility program for individuals who are interested in moving into nursing from other healthcare programs, as well as a joint admission with UAB in an ADN and BSN partnership program, and new nursing apprenticeships.

Wallace State’s Department of Nursing Education has twice been recognized as a Center of Excellence in Nursing Education by the National League for Nursing.
