Hanceville, AL — The Wallace State Intramural Sports Department held it’s Wallyball Championship Tournament near the end of the Spring 2023 semester, in the Dan York Practice Facility within the College Wellness Center. In the championship match, team “H & B’s” defeated team “Cross Country Crushers” in three sets to claim the Intramural Title. The Cross Country Crushers won the first set 21-16 while H & B’s won the second set by a score of 21-15. The deciding set was not as close though, with H & B’s winning 15-4 to take the match and championship.

H & B’s team consisted of WSCC students Mason Reed, Kaiya Butler, Dustin Speak, Hadlee Freeman, and Andrew Braden. They made it through the season without losing a match. The Cross Country Crushers team consisted of Joseph Arriaga, Luke Holcombe, Jonathan Phillips, and Andrew Wrenn; all are members of the college’s men’s cross country team.

Wallyball is a sport created in 1979 that is also known as Rebound Volleyball. It’s essentially volleyball played inside a racquetball court where you can spike, serve, and hit the rubber ball off the walls. It is played with four players on the court for each team.

Occupational Therapy Assistant student Kaiya Butler said, “I played volleyball in high school, so I love this! It’s a little different though when you have the ball coming at you quickly from different angles off the walls.”

“We had a good turnout for the spring mini-season and all participants enjoyed learning and playing the sport,” said Wallace State Intramural Organizer Dakota Nichols. “Hopefully word will spread about the sport, and we’ll have even more Intramural Teams participate in the league next year.”

A new year of various Intramural Sports Seasons will begin in the Fall 2023 semester at Wallace State. For more information on how to participate in those, contact Dakota Nichols at 256.352.8047 or dakota.nichols@wallacestate.edu.
