Wallace State basketball teams sweep Volunteer State in season opener; Hope Harrell is individual low medalist as women’s golf wins Jeff State Invite

HANCEVILLE, ALA. – Wallace State’s basketball teams opened the 2021-2022 season with
a convincing sweep against Volunteer State at home on Tuesday night.
The Lady Lions opened the campaign with a 72-39 win and the Wallace State men followed
with an 81-61 triumph at Traditions Bank Arena inside Tom Drake Coliseum.
In the women’s game, Wallace State sustained a 16-4 advantage after the first quarter
and pushed the cushion to 45-12 by the break.
Newcomer Kyra Long paced the Lady Lions with 19 points and sophomore Payton Golden
contributed 16 points, six assists and four steals. Jordan Parker flirted with a double-double,
scoring 10 points and collecting eight rebounds, and Camille Jenkins and Destiny Garrett
scored six points apiece.
The Lady Lions led 62-26 after three quarters.
Wallace State travels to Mississippi today to play Jones College.
Men’s game
Wallace State 81, Volunteer State 61
Sophomore Kuran Garner poured in a game-high 21 points, Jaylen Lemons scored 17 and
Calvin Payton added 10 as the Lions cruised in the nightcap.
Wallace State maintained a 41-25 advantage at the half and led by as many as 24 points
in the second half.
The Lions return the favor today, traveling to Volunteer State.
The men host Roane State on Saturday at 4 p.m.
Wallace State women’s golf
Hope Harrell secured individual low medalist honors and the Wallace State women’s
golf team closed the fall season by winning the Jefferson State Pioneer Invitational
this week.
Maddie Nelson finished third overall and Hannah Sanders was fifth, placing each on
the All-Tournament team.
Harrell, a freshman from Guntersville, finished with an 18-over par 160 for the individual
title, outlasting Nelson and a Snead State golfer by three strokes.
Nelson carded a 163 and Sanders a 165.
Wallace State’s Brileigh Roberts was tied for 13th with a 177 and Abby Brown carded an 187.
Wallace State beat runner-up Snead State by 25 strokes.
Wallace State women’s golf is the four-time defending ACCC champion.
